For many years, the founder of memecon worked in various international, multi-cultural business environments.  It was always a matter of meaning in different functional and cultural areas. Over time, it emerged the insight that a large part of the business tasks depends on a common understanding of the business, i.e. data, IT systems, business processes, organization  and management. The result of this reflection is these insights and ideas. The core question is always: What does this mean?

Results were  

  • Data models with detailed data descriptions,

  • Process models with events, functions, connections, in-/output data, responsibilities as well as IT aspects,

  • IT system models with system maps, modules, databases and interfaces,

  • Organizational models with role descriptions (task, authority, responsibility) and

  • Management models in the form of leadership and governance standards.

The way form data model, over enterprise data model and enterprise model up to enterprise architecture (EA) took over two  decades. Important methodical contributions came from James Martin, Professor Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer, John Zachman and Professor Dr. Hubert Österle. James Martin contributed with his methods to an engineer-like approach of information engineering.  The special of his part was the integration of various methods, which lead end of 1980 and beginning  1990 to tools for Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) e.g. Information Engineering Workbench - IEW. Professor Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer provided  with his ARIS concept an extension of the IT-technical aspects concerning programs and data, with organizational, procedural and achievement-oriented elements. The ARIS model connects data, function, organization, process and deliverables on the Levels  concept, DP-concept and implementation. Crucial for the viability of the approach is the integration of all information into one tool, the ARIS Toolset. Today, all around the world, uncountable enterprises are operating huge ARIS models, which are used  graphically and database-driven as basis for business decisions. John Zachman created with his Zachman framework the foundation for enterprise architecture management (EAM). The model was created end of the Eighties of the last Century as the other approaches.  The major focus lies here on the description of the IT-architecture of an enterprise. The relevant models are put into a matrix according to the aspects what, how, where, who, when and why, as well as after Scope contexts, business concepts, system logic,  technology physics, component assemblies, and operations instance classes. In the cells of the matrix, the relevant models are provided. Professor Dr. Hubert Österle focused with his business engineering approach on business processes. Thus, it extended  the above approaches, which aimed at the structuring of information, with process-orientated procedures. Thereby PROMET, a structured course of action for the development of business processes is particularly worth mentioning. It is interesting for the  logical connections between all results. A consistent business process concept can be developed by the consequent use of PROMET - from the process map, across the macro, to the micro model.

All these concepts have a holistically structured, integrated Model, which unites business, organizational and technical Aspects.

Its findings employ nowadays a large number of Specialists. In enterprises databases, software, infrastructure, processes and skills are documented and simulated. Only based on such models, the degree of effectiveness and efficiency reached today became  possible. At the same time, the necessary models bind capacities and give the feeling of control, which is actually inappropriate, by the gap between model and reality. Think of the butterfly in India, which releases a tornado in the U.S.by flapping its  wings. The same way complex models react sensitively to smallest changes of parameters. In the models „hard" factors are used, the measurable indicators. However, „soft" factors determine the events (e.g. motivation, acceptance, commitment,  black swans or wildcards). Since these influence factors are hardly seizable, they only can be simulated with difficulty. The most powerful tool to control these factors is communication. In addition, what is Communication without content?

Organizations respectively responsible managers have the tendency to communicate fast in order to overrun by operational events. It is more and rarer to substantiate what the vision is, what consequences goals have or whether the organization is consistently  aligned. Over time, this has developed an approach that provides core elements for meaning design - ideas, strategies, concepts, plans, …. The question is repeatedly: What does this mean? What does it mean for related people? What does it mean  for planning? What does it mean for infrastructure?

By looking for the element of meaning meme presented itself as the meaning-carrying object. Memes are "any permanent pattern of matter or information produced by an act of human intentionality" (M. Csikszentmihalyi) and thus the object of meaning.
 This was not yet enough for a structured designing of meaning. Now all that was missing was a constant structure, which controls the connection of all aspects. In the absence of an appropriate approach, memecon offers a framework for meaning design.  Focus of meaning design is the practical benefit and less the development of a new theory. For these reasons, meaning design was developed outside of the scientific space, which means that impulses, which flowed into this approach, are not scientifically  prepared. Nevertheless, some of the sources that flowed indirectly into the concept can be found in the bibliography.

One or the other puzzle stone concerning meaning design is set. However, the approaches of the meaning design are cast in stone. Therefore, creative usage is recommended. This website pursues the goal of bringing meaning and meaning design into the consciousness  of today's decision makers and doers. If you find to a new view about your responsibility, then you should not stop halfway. Maybe sometimes you remember James Dean "Rebel without a cause". The german title of the movies is "… for they know not  what they do".  Be attentive and make yourselves aware, what you do - no matter how.
